Christchurch, July 15. Tho Harbor Board contemplate lengthening the Lyttelton dock by 50 feet, which will make it 150 feet on the floor It will then be the longest dock in the Southern Hemisphere

The Industrial Exhibition, for which great preparations have been in progress fur some weeks, was opened by the Mayor'to-day at the Drill-shed There was a large attendance, and the Exhibition was Successful beyond exneotation So*many. applications were received that many had to be rejected, although there is no intention of giving awards or even certificates of any kind The following is a general description of the' Show -given by an evening paper:—“On entering the enclosure and passing the inner barricade the visitor at once sees some of the exhibits The out-of-door items include vehicles, water pumps, etc Conifers have sprung up as if by magic at the entrance to the building, which is m the centre of tho western side The spacious verandah is closely covered in, and is utilised as a place in which to show carriages A portion at one end is fitted up as a refreshment room and luncheon, bar Entering the largo hall, the scene is a brilliant and imposing one The north end may be termed, the top of the room

In the centre is an admirably fitted refresh* ment bar for the ladies, wherein Mr Morton dispenses tea, coffee, etc Above the ' bar is the band platform On the left is a prand display of locally made art furniture lent by Mr A J .White, and on the right is a similar collection shown- by Messrs King and Co, Turning along the right is the hatter’s stand of Mr.Kulbort,%herein two skilled workmen are showing the various stages of the manufacture-, and next them Mr Proctor, Opticin, is given-practical - lessons in connection with the production of lenses Then comes: clothing produced by the N' Z Clothing Company, and the adjoining display is mkde by the proprietors of the Lyttelton Times illustrating the progress made in artistic print mg, engrossing,’ etc The next Stands are those of Messrs Dunn, Bros, tinsmiths, and Mr Atkinson, range maker A great' trophy of woodware, extending from floor to roof, has been built by Mr Jenkins, and the remainder of this side of the hall is occupied by Messrs A and T Burt, of Dunedin, who make a really wonderful show of articles in brass and copper gasaliers, pumps, lead and composite piping, etc The south end of the building is filled with a series of collections representing some of the mineral wealth of the colony
