THE TWENTY FOUR HOURS’ WALKING CONTEST.

Dunedin, July 3. Th twenty four hours’ walking competition began on Friday night at the Garrison Hall. Eighteen started, out of 23 entered. The start was made at 10.15 p.m., and some good Walking ensued. At 2 o’clock this afternoon the walking match stood thus : Brooks, Swan, Deuchrass, and Drummond leading ; all these men averaged close on five miles an hour since the start. Nine competitors retired, including O’Connor and Delany, Claxton did not start. There is great interest in the match, and a very large attendance. July 4. At the finish of the walking match the hall was crowded. Brooks, of Dunedin, won, haying walked 116 miles. In-twenty four hours ; Swan, of Christ* church, siecohd, with 114 miles ; and Malcolm, of Dunedin, third, with 113 miles. Me Ewan, of Dunedin, retired at 106 miles, very much exhausted Drum mond retired at 100 miles. Swan was pretty well played out, and Brooks was also done . Malcolm looked good for another twenty miles.
