SOUTH ORARI SCHOOL COMMITTEE
The South Orari School Committne held their ordinary meeting on Saturday last. Present —Messrs R. Barker (Chairman), May, Bates, McLeod and Brosnalum.
Correspondence from the Board of Education was read asking for information as to date of Committee meetings, and requesting their co-operation in endeavouring to increase the attendance, and stating that the damaged map had been replaced. Resolved—" That ho Board be informed that the Committee meet on the third Saturday in each month, and that they have had the compulsory clauses in force for s< me tima past with satistactory results. The Chairman stated, tLat Mr Turpin had not yet been summoned as he had received a letter from him, expressing regret fur any irregularity in the attendance of his children, and stating that he was under "he impression that they had attended the required number of days. In the future he - would see that the wishes of the Committee were complied with.
The Chairman's action in the matter being approved, lie was requested not to issue a summons unless the regularity occured again.
Thy teacher leported a marked improvnient in the attendance since the holidays. Accompanying the report was an account from Messrs Hutton and C . lor books supplied, amounting to ss, and a list of books amounting to 5s Id.
The teacher preferred to pay the former on being allowed to repay himself from the latter sum. He also requested the Committee to re-plough the land round his house, on condition of his paying for the levelling and laying down to grass.
Kesolved—-"That the Committee are of opinion that it would be more busi-ness-like if the teacher were to pay in tho amount received for books sold, and request Mr Hutton to send in his account to the Committee for payment; and that his attention be drawn to the rule requiring him before ordering books «&c, to supply the Committee with a list of what he required." With reference to the ploughing, it was resolved that the request be granted aud that all the land connected with the school be re-ploughed forthwith, Mr Bates being authorised to have the work done for fie sum of L—.
Tenders for fencing and tree planting were received from Messrs Wheelband, Purdie, Ply, Harrisson, and Ellis *nd Coombes.
The tender of Messrs Ellis and Coombes being accepted, Messrs Bates and McLeod wore appointed to superintend the work.
Mr McLeod was appointed visitor for the ensuing month. After passing for payment sums to the nmount of L 4 Is, tho meeting adjourned to the third Saturday in July.
