HEARTLESS CRUELTY.
A great saanlal has occured at New York. The Shepherd’s Fold, a home for destitute children, which was under the management of the Rev Edward Cowley, has been looked into and 23, children have hern rescued from that", d.m of neglect and illusage, and allowed to show their pale and haggard faces in tho court room. The i ecital of the outrngeous treatment of these waifs confined to the tender mercies of charity is enough to make blood turn co' d . They have been starved, overwor -ed, and slowly poisoned . They have been compelled to do all the cooking and household work themselves, and the girls, only one of 'them has reached her fifteenth year, and have sti’ained their backs t ver the washtuhs. 1 here have been no servants in the institution; there ha* been little food and even that little has been unwholesome; and the medial attendance has been shocking. These startling facts have been brought to light by the Society for th ■ Prevention of Cruelty to Children. The officer* of the institution promise to repeal th- accnsatbns, and the Rev Cowley has to take his trial on a charge of murdei by starving several children.
