At the woo 1 sales to-day 10,200 bales were offered, making a total of 235,700 bales catalogued since the opening. The tone of the sale was dull. The John Elder has arrived with the mails via Brindisi, which were delivered in London to-day. Paris, May 20. The warship Finisterre has sailed for Melbourne with the French Exhibits for the forthcoming Exhibition. Chili, May 19. The ship Antipodes has put into Valparaiso in a leak/ state. She will have to discharge her cargo while the repairs are being effected. London, May 20. A meeting of the Conservative party was held to-lay at which Earl Beaconsfield made a speech. His Loidship re ferred to the result of the elections, and he could only attribute the defeat of the Conservatives to a desire felt by the electors for a change of Ministry. He slated he would retain the leadeiship of his party, and advocaied a dignified opposition to the Liberals, and the f rmamatiou of proper local Conservative organisations throughout the country. Earl Carnarvon who resign .id his position in the late Ministry in 1878, in consequence of its Eastern policy, was present at the meeting.

The first session of the twenty-second Parliament was opened to-day, by Royal Commission. The speech from tiie -Throne was read by the Lord ( hancellor. It states that the relations of Great Britain with all foreign powers continue to be of a very friendlycharacter The hope is expressed that in concert with the Great powers an early and ompletc fulfilment of the Treaty of Berlin may be promote 1, and that effectual eforms in Turkey and equal laws for the Turkish race may be brought about, together with the settlement ot the question of territorial right. The strict fulfilment of the treaty of Berlin is deemed essential and necessary, in order to avert complications in Eastern Europe. The Right Hon. G. J. Goschen had been despatched as special Ambassador o Constantinople, with the object of bringing about the fulfil ment of treaty obligations. Increasing efforts were being made to pacify Afghanistan and establish a constitution and secure the independence of a Government in that country. A confederaat.on of the South African colonies will be recommended, and British supremacy in the Tr nsva-d will be maintained. The Act passed by tlm last Parliament for the preservation of peace in Ireland will not be renewed. The Speech concludes by stating that the principal measures to be introduced by the Government during the session will include a Burials Bid, and Bills tor the renewal of’the Ballot Act, for the reform of the game laws, for declaring the liability of employers in cases of accidents to workmen, and fer extension of the borough franchise to Ireland.

The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of ngland is L 15,250,000. At the wool sales to-day, 8300 bales were dffered, making a total of 244,000 bales catalogued since the opening. The tone of the sale was .lather fii m.

The P. and O. Steam Navigation Company have declared a dividend of 2 per cent for the half-year. The Orient Company’s steamer John Elder arrived at Plymmouth to-day. Berlin, May 21 .

A Ministerial Bill has been introduced into the lower House of the German Parliament, for the Revision of tie Maylaws. The changes proposed will provide large concassions to Catholics in Germany, and meet the views of the Vatican.

May 21. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britian is 1,910, 000 quarters.

The cricket match between the Australians and eighteen of Lonpsite was resinned. The An tralians made 214 in their first innings, Blackham scoring 81 and Bonn r 74. The Longsite men, who had made 118 in their first innings on the previous day, then went in, and when tin* stumps wei’edrawn had scored for their s cond innings 72 with t’ae loss of eight wickets.
