ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, March 4, The Australian and New Zealand January mails, via Suez, were delivered to-day. The Bank of England’s weekly returns show a total reserve in notes and bullion of 16,625,000. Adelaide wlieat and flour, and Australian tallow, remains as at last quotations At the wool sales to-day 9900 bales were offered. The tone of the sale was firm, and the bidding very active. March 5, New Zealand wheat, 47s 9d, cost freight and insurance. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 1,850,000 quarters. At the wool sales to-day 6600 bales were catalogued. The tone of the market cont'nues unchanged. Best Australian tallow, 335. Tenders were opened to-day for fifty thousand pounds, being the balance of the Oumarti water- vorks per cent loan, the price being 104. L 58,009 was ■subscribed. Santa Cruz, March 6. Hostilities have again been renewed between Chili and Bolivia. The Chilian fleet attacked the town of Arica. The commander of the Huascar, which has lately been refitted by the Chilians, was killed in the engagement. St. Petersburg, March 4. Moodensky, the Nihilist who was arrested in connection with the recent attempt on the life of General MGikofl, has been tried and found guilty of the offence. He was sentenced to death, and will be ban red immediately. A Nihilist prppagand i lias oeen issue 1 expressing regret at the failure of tbo explosion at the Winter Palace, and stating that f n ther attempts on the life of tire Czar will be made unless ho abdicates or grants the reforms ot the Constitution d - manded by the Nihilists.
AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Melbouknb. March 6. The race for the Australian Cup, run to-day, resulted as follows Columbus 1 ; Petrea 2 ; Zambesi 3. There were sixteen starters, and the race was a good one, but the favorites were nowhere. Time 4 nuns. G secs. A heavy shower fell shortly before the r - ce. The last day’s races of the Autumn Meeting took place to-day. There was a better attendance than on either of the previous days. The Newmarket Handicap was won by Aspen, with Japan second and His Lordship third. It was a close finish. The Town Plate was won by Columbus. The racing throughout the day was very good. Adelaide, March 6. Wheat is quoted to-day at 4s 9d. The market for breadstuffa is quiet. Town flour is worth Lll to Lll ss, and country brands LlO 10s to LlO 15s. King George’s Sound, March 6. The P. and 0. Company’s steamer Bangalore with the inward Suez mail has arrived here. She has measles on board. One death occurred on the passage.
