WAIHI BUSH.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
During the past month the farmers in this district have been busy reaping their crops, so that the fields have presented rather a lively appearance. The weather lias beeojairthat could be desired, no strong nor’-westers or heavy rains having occurred to injure the crops to any appreciable extent. For once the Clerk of the Weather has smiled on the harvest, and it is to be hoped that till all the corn is in stack, his friends will not ruffle the serenity of his temper. We appear to be as far from the midday mail now as ever, and unless the matter is brought under the notice of the Postmaster-General, we must put up with the present inconvenient mail arrangements. At present all appear so busy harvesting mac mey cannot find time to attend to such matters. In a short time though there is no doubt that they will rouse themselves and protest against the injustice with which they are being treated. To night the newly appointed Domain Board are to meet, I believe, for the first time, when they will elect a chairman. The members, you have learnt.are: Messrs
A great deal of correspondence has been carried on between our Local (Joinmiitec and the Board re E location re the dangerous state of the school chimney, and tue very faulty gutters on the roof of the building. A short time ago the architect to the Board, Mr Duval, accompanied by another ineinb rof his profession, Mr Roberts of Timarn, visited the school for tt e purpose of examining the chimney, etc. As the day was, however, too wet to allow of a sheet of iron being lifted, and the ventilators were unfortunately battened down, these gentlemen had no opportunity of looking at the chimney between the roof and the ceiling, where the danger lies. Th y have, however, recommended that two feet be taken down, when (they state) it will-be quite safe. Fur this work and the widening of gutter the mag* nilicent, or rather the munificent, sum of ‘‘ L2 ” has been granted, the archi'eot having stated that that amount would be ample. Perhaps that gentleman will see to the matter ! or : Does he think that the Local Committee will have it done, and nay the balance over the sum allowed from their flowing coffers'? What childlike simplicity he must give that body the credit of possessing ! Should a nor’wester (such as we had last year) come before it is attended to,down the chimney will fall, and then no! L2O will repair the damage done in its descent. “ A stitch in time saves nine,” and a few pounds expended now will save a great many pounds in future.
The harvest vacation here closes this week, and the school re-opeus on Monday next, when as the weather is fine a large muster of children is expected. We are about to lose Mr C. Tanc rec j from our midst, he having already dispu se of Ills property to some young gentleman, who (repoit says) is to arrive this month.
