This is the sort of thing that may happen under a “ Liberal ” dictatorship —Striking cases of terrorism in the departments have from time to time occurred under the .Berry regime (says the Austrlasian), and with regard to subordinate officers as well as heads of departments. Mr James Flynn, a 1 stoker on board the Victoria, was quoted as confirming a told by the Chief Secretary in the House, that Captain Stan ey’s time bilges of the Victoria were in a tl beastly ” and filthy condition. Mr Flynn’explained that he had been misunderstood, for he meant nothing of the sort. He was drumra-'d out of the service immediately. Mr W. N. Birch, a ganger on the Ararat line attended a political meeting, and when the Volura grant was mentioned he interjected, “ It’s a swindle.” The man bore a first-class character as a workman. But he was summarily dismissed, and his offence was stated as a warning to others. Mr R. Clark (Wimmcra) brought under the notice of the Assembly, July, 15th, 1879, the conduct of the Minister of Railways with'regard to the Horsham staionmaster. In introducing a deputation to the Minister, Mr Clark remarked that the stationmaster had said to him that a single hue would never take away all the wheat from Horsham. Upon tis he was interrupted by Mr Woods, who gave orders on the spot that the stationmaster should be removed or dismissed for conversing with a member. Mr Clark contended that the action ot the Mm stea was an insult to the.
