THE LATE COMET.

We clip the following from the Sydney letter of the Otpgo Daily Times : The following information has been fur nished to the public by Mr. H. C Russell, Government 'Astronomer, under date February 8 :—" Last evening I. received two telegrams, calling attention to a comet-like body in the 3. W. In Sydney the evening was too cloudy to admit of anything being seen, even if the telegrams had been in time ; From various telegrams it appeara the ray of light was seen at Adelaide, Melbourne Deniliquin, Urana, Ocoma, Tumut, Orange, :>nd Tamworth ; this evening a careful look-out was kept, but it was not seen until B*s p.m., and then as the faintest possible streak of light, extending upwards from a bank of clouds in the Sooth-west towards the star Beta Gruis, or rather about t 'cedecrees west of that star. Above I. t point it could be traced, very faint in -.ed, for about six degrees ; the diameter ct the streak this evening was not move than a degree and a qur.rter and its length about 4o degree (angle). Nothing could ba seen of the iiead or nue'eus, whi'-h was probably below the horizon, and therefore no accurate observations could be obtained.. Judging by the appearance of the tail, and its extr me length, assuming it to be that of a cjmet, it is just possible that the head may be scent before sunrise No large eom3t is expectedjust now, so that this one isprobably a stranger It is remarkable-. that from the various reports which have readied me, it seems to occupy to-nu,ht the same position as it did on Monday night, but it would seem to befaint ?r.*" * '
