VICTORIA. The accounts of the late James Eville, Town Clerk, of Emerald Hill, show a deficiency of £950. His body will be exhumed for an inquest. Robert and James Shanks have been committed for an attempt, at Moe, to stick up the Bank of Australasia.
As the Presbyterian Review does not represent the church in matters of doctrine, the Assembly has appointed a Committee of investigation.
Constable Bowen was the man who shot at the bushrangers at Bendeer in July, 1877. At Adalange, when the telegram arrived stating that armed men were in the district of Griindagai, special constables were sworn in and the Tumbarnbu police sent for their capture. Afterwards, when their capture became known and the specials disbanded, they discharged their firearms, causing a great fright to people living in the outskirts of the: town, who flocked in, expecting that the bushrangers had reached Adalange and that fighting was going on, or that great excitement existed. The Banks are guarded, and every precaution is being taken. On the arrival at Cootamundra of the news announcing the appearance of the bushrangers,Messrs Eishburn and Monton, two of the railway contractors’ men, volunteered to assist the police.

The mechanic at Duckingfield’s Colliery at Newcastle, struck for an eight instead of a nine hour system. The colliery managers are combining for a future course of action. In the Legislative Assembly Mr Henry Thurloy moved for leave to introduce a Bill to prove for the inspection of nunneries. The motion was negatived by 30 to 2. The ketch Lsbon capsized near Newcastle, but the crew escaped ; the passengers below, however were drowned.
