C.J.C. SPRING MEETING. Christchurch, Nov. 11. The races to-day were well attended. It rained slightly in the morning, and at the concluison of the day's racing. The racing was good, but the fields were not so large as in previous years. Sir Hercules Robiuson was present during the day. The following are the results of theday's racing : p FREE HANDICAP. ' Mr Mallock's Foul Play. 9st - Messrs Mason and Vallance's Sinking ..Fiuid, Bst 61b - - ■ : 2 were ~fJw3?n^ < »fc^tijlft-a*- u The race was a pretty one throughout. DERBY STAKEB. ».„';■ Mr Ray's Hornby, Bst 101 b - Al Mr Redwood's Grip, Bst 101 b - -2 Mr Walter's Billingsgate - - 3 The entries comprised eight horses. Hornby and Grip made the running, had it all their owu way. Clifford and Nolan, two jockeys, were fined L2 for disobedience at the post. CANTERBURY J. C. HANDICAP. Mr Goodman's Chancellor - • 1 Mr Ray's Maritan i - - -2 Mason's and Vallance's Pin fire - - 3 This race was Chancellor's from the commencement, although Maritana headed Chancellor before coming to Ford's, and on turning the corner Wattie commenced to ride the mare at the distance, and then a struggle ensued between Mr.ritaoa and Chancellor for honors, but Wattie then brought Chancellor a neck beyond her/ 1 apponen', thus winning a splendidly con- | tested race. j THE WELCOME STAKES. Mr Prince's Hilarious - - - 1 Mr St. Owen's Sir George - .- 2 Mr Smith's Tim WhirSer .- - 3 No interest was taken', in this race, asthe .start could not be seen, there being : several horsemen around the starter. . The following items in regard to the aboro meeting were brought by the Arawata : The Cup winner is a five-year-old brown horse by Tim Wliifller, from Norma, and was bred by Mr Inglis, of Ballan, and sold to Ja ■ Tasmanian gentleman, who races under the name of " Rawlinson." Darriwell is "the last horso whose appearance suggests & Cup winner. His name was scarcely mentioned in the betting, and his stable only backed him slightly. , ! Le Loup looked very handsome when stripped, bub did not-show up in the race. Suwarrow, the Derby winner, is a beautiful \
small dark grey horse, by Snowdon. Some time ago a Melbourne Volunteer dreamt that Suwarrow would win the Derby and Darriwell the Cup. He mentioned his dream publicly several days before the races. lUETHBR PAETICtTIiARS. The'Spring Meeting of the V.B.C. commenced with the Melbourne Stakes, for which only four horses started. First King won easily, Richmond second aud Le Loup third. Th; "performance of Le Loup was considered to extinguish his chance for the Cup. The Autumn Handicap was won by Trump, with Riyerton second, and Waxy third. Twenty-three yougsters started. In the Maribyrnong Plate, Palmyra won with ease. Greraldine and Otira ran a dead heat for second place. Time, lmin.'"4sec—which was only beaten once Verbena won the race in 1876. Fourteen horses started for the Derby, which was won by Suwarrow, who made his own running nearly all the way. BeJifcdruui wis second, Rivalry third : Time-r-2 minute? 43 seconds, which has only been equalled once, namely, by Chester in 1877. Swiveiler won the Essendon Stakes in acanter, with Le Loup second, and Strathean, third.
The Footscray Stakes were won by .Tocal, after a fine finish with Sir Joseph, iionarque being third. Respite won the Konuington stakes by a head from Drover.
