POLITICAL NEWS.

(From the Lyttelton Times.) Wellington, Nov. 4. Nothing new has emerged respecting the financial designs of the Government. They are understood still to include a property tax, increased tea and sugar duties, an increase of 2s in spirits, grain and timber duties ; and subsidies to local bodies to stop after this year. A Government caucus was held this morning. It is understood that it was agreed that miners should have a ratepayers’ franchise, besides special lepresen - tations as at present. When the House met, Sir George Grey gave notice of a Bill to make the Legislative Council elective. A discussion took place about the Maori prisoners, in which the Maori members contended that they were being illegally detained. Mr Sheehan came to the aid of the Ministry, declaring his belief that if the Maoris were set at liberty a. disturbance would take place. The Opposition are simply watching the Government measures. Probably parties will become clearly divided on the question of imposing the tea and sugar duties.

(From the Otago Daily Times.) Wellington, Nov. 4. Those who were present at the caucus of the Ministerial party to-day were very reticent as to what passed, but it is reinoured that the party are in favour of the retention of the Maori ratepaying franchise and the present special representation. It is also said that the Government intend to propose an increase in the the duty on spirits by 2s per gallon. Little political news is stirring, everybody looking forward to the Financial Statement, which I am inclined to think will not be brought down this week, as several important points—-notably the stamp duties and matters? connected with the property tax —are still not definitely settled.
