Auckland, October 20: A fire took place early this morning at Branson a id Foster's, gasfitters, in Wakefield's buildings, Albert streei:. Mr Foster, one of the partners slept on the vftremises, and he says he was awakened %y hearing the sounds of falling plaster, and upon getting up he saw that the drawingroom and pattern loft were on fire, and he at once gave the alarm. The firo subsided in half an hour afterwards, tho damage done being considerable. The roof of Wakefield s office was also destroyed, and the contents of the shop of Mr Reynold's, a lapidary, were also injured. The firm had insurances on tho workshop and pattern loft of about £IOO in the New Zealand Insurance Company. The origin of the fire is unknown. Mr Foster thinks that it arose in some way through the connections with the gas fittings A branch man, named Boreham, was severely cut by the falling of some Blate. He fainted from the loss of blood.
Wellington, October 20.
The New Zealander this morning, in an article evidently written on authority, characterises the statement of the Post respecting an alleged coalition, at " Either a deliberate falsehood, or a most foolish invention."
The Hon Mr Campbell interviewed Mr J. 0. Brown, suggesting that a compromise might be effected between-the Opposition and Government parties. The subject was then mooted to the leaders of the Opposition, and their ultimatum, unreservedly expressed, was—"We will not consider the proposal of a coalition, but we will give you our votes for granting reasonable supplies for the public .service, if you will allow tho no-confidence debate to come on immediately after." The Opposition await the reply of the Hall Ministry.
Invercarcill, October 20.
The funeral of gunner Brown an Invercargill artilleryman, took place yesterday. Tiie band played the "Dead March." Two hundred Volunteers were present.
The foundation stone of the Law Courts is to be laid by Judge Harvey on Thursday next. A half holiday has been, proclaimed. Yesterday was the annual Hospital Sunday LlO4 was realised since last year. Great satisfaction, is expressed here at the firm attitude of the Opposition in the House.
Great annoyance is felt here at Mr Mo Gaughan's proceedings as a member.
