FOOTBALL.

South Canterbury v, Temuka. This match took place on the ground of the latter on Saturday last. The weather was all that could be desired, although the ground was somewhat slippery from the effects of the late snow-storm. . Owing to the state of the ground, the spectators were not so numerous as on former occasions of this kind. The following are the names of the teams :■ — Temuka: J. Roberts, back ; Gr. Craig and T. E. Roberts, half-backs ; P. Tavender, captain ; J. T. M. Hayhurst and 11. Smith, quarter-backs; Gr. R. Wood, H. aRd Gr. Smith, W. A. Murray, A. Dunnett. G-. Capes, P. Thomson, J. Macfarlane, and J. Baguley, forwards, South Canterbury.: A. Seal and W. King, backs ; Craig and Melton, quarterbacks ; Archer, Brett, Grordon, Grant, Hawkins, Campbell, Chapman. Walker, Hirams, Seaton, and Lough. South Canterbury won the toss, and elected to take the western goal, kicking with the wind, and it was agreed that the game should be played in four spells of 20 minutes each. Tavender kicked off for Temuka, and the ball was run up in close proximity to their opponent's goal, where some hoary scrimmaging took place, but eventually the ball was carried back to the middle of" the ground, where some heavy scrimmages again took place until time was called.

In the second spell the ball was carried up close to the' Temuka goal line, when Wood collared the ball, and, by the help of Messrs Murray and Gape 3, succeeded in carrying it close up to the enemy's goal line, but ran into touch, and the ball, upon being thrown in, Gr. Smith, by a smart piece of dodgery, succeeded in getting a touch-down for Temuka, but in bringing the ball out he failed to make his mark witli the ball, and was rushed by the S.O. men immediately he crossed the goal line, and consequently lost the try at a goal. The ball being brought into play again, Hayhurst obtained a mark nearly in front of the S.O. goal, and just missed kicking a goal, after which Eeai was I obliged to force down, when time was called. _ In the third spell Craig, for S.O, made a capital run, and succeeded in obtaining a touch down for S.C. Beal took the try, but failed to kick a goal, not having allowed sufficient for the wind. On the ball being brought out again it was driven back, and Temuka was obliged to force it down in self-defence. The ball being brought out again was run down into S.O. goal, and they in turn had to force it down in self-defence, when time again was called. The fourth spell Baguley succeeded in making a good run, but was eventually collared by Melton, when the "ball was dropped and a rush made by W. B. Craig and Gr. P. Wood, and after a smart run, Craig succeeded in obtaining possession behind the S.C. goal, when ho waf, obliged to force it down. On the ball being brought into play again it was gradually worked down close on the Temuka goal line, where it was

kept until time was called, the ball being tlnm almost on tlie goal line. Thus ended the match, resulting in a draw in favor of Temuka, the game standing thus : Tenraka, 1 touchdown and 3 forcedowns to S.C.'s 1 touchdown and 2 forcedowns.

For S.G. Brett, Chapman, Thierens, and W. B. Craig played well. For Temuka Tayender, Gapes, Murray, Hayhursfc, and Wood played very -well. It is argued by the S.C. team that as Smith failed to make "his mark in bringing the ball out from a touchdown-he lost the try at goal, and consequently the touchdown did not count. We fail to see it in this light ; the fact of then- losing their try at goal does not in our opinion do away with the tochdown.
