Presbyterian Church. Last Sunday (the first of the evening services under the new arrangement) the church was nearly full, when the Rev Mr Gillies preached a most appropriate and touching sermon.
Hunting.—Tho next meet of the hounds belonging to gentlemen in South Canterbury will take place near Mr Slack’s, on Saturday next.
English Mail. —The English mail via San Francisco will close at the Tcmuka Postoffice on Friday, 20th instant, at 2.30 pan. Money orders and registered letters on Thursday, 19th instant, at 5 pan. Dorcas Society.—Wo beg to inform our readers that in consequence of the Supremo Court being hold this week, aad also tho unsettled state of tho weather, the proposed concert will bo postponed till Wednesday next, 25th instant.
Coursing Club. —A meeting of the Club will bo hold on Messrs 'Walker and Ologstoun’s estate,' Mount Four Peaks, on the 2Gtli instant.
The Late Accident.—We are glad to learn that tho man Fleetwood, on whoso case we commented some time ago, is progressing favorably after haying Ids leg amputated near the thigh. The Weather.—Heavy rain has saturated the roads and made our streets a mass of mud. From the interior all traffic is nearly at a stand-still.
Railway Bridge. —We were in hopes of being able to announce the name of the successful tenderer for the Tcmuka interior railway bridge, but we have been unable to obtain particulars. Wc believe a tender was sent in which seems reasonable, and doubtless it will be accepted.
Laxgeidge’s Boad. —lt is notified by advertisement in another column that the above road is closed for traffic, and will remain closed until the bridge now being built is completed. I.O.G.T.—An open lodge in connection with the above order was held in the meet-ing-room, Temuka school, on Monday evening last, presided over by W.C.T. 13ro. Ifayhurst. The programme —consisting of songs, reading, recitations, &o—was very creditably gone through by Kessrs Clinch, Gapes, Barber, Chitchfiold, and others, and a very enjoyable evening was spent.
F. Fbaxks ax Teaiujca Hoad Boakd.— The jury in this case returned a verdict for the plaintiff of £T92 damages and costs. A legal point. liOAvever, as to the Board’s liability Avas raised, and ultimately it Avas agreed to be left to argue it in Banco in Christchurch at a future date. The solicitors for the defendants are quite confident of ultimate success, Avldlo on the other hand the plaintiff’s solicitors arc as confident of the Board’s liability. Pleasaxx Y ALLEY SCHOOL. —A meeting of the committee of the above school Avas held on Saturday evening last, June 14. Present—Messrs Ilarclcastlc (chairman), W. Guilford, J. Grogan, I). Gregan, A. Lysaght, and Iv. Brophy. The minutes of the previous meeting Avcre read and confirmed. Correspondence Avas read from the Board of Education re additions, asking the committee to obtain offer of land across the road on to Avliicli to shift the school buildings. From same, in reply to one from the committee stating that the land in question Avas not to be obtained, asking the committee to obtain other oifers, and to recommend one, stating price, &c. From same, enclosing sundry forms re compulsory attendance. From same, requesting the committee to nominate two gentlemen to fill the .vacancies in the Board of Education caused by the resignation of Messrs luavoocl and Tailored. From same, copy of first annual report. With regard to site, it was explained that owing to the length, of time that had elapsed since the offer Avas made of the land on the north side of the road, it had been sold, and the present oAvner declined to part Avith any of it. Two offers of laud Avorc received, Avhich the committee agreed to inspect, AA'hich they did subsequently, Avhcn they decided to recommend the purchase of five acres from Mr D. Gregan, not only on account of its suitability, but also on account of its central situation. Messrs Melville, Gray, and Thomas Ilardcastle Avcre nominated as members of the Board of Education. The average attendance during the month Avas 50, Avith 01 present at one time. After passing accounts to the amount of £9 13s 3d, the meeting adjourned.
