MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of the Board was held in the Road Board office, Peel Forest, on Friday last. Present—Hon J. B. A. Acland (chairman), Messrs C. G. Tripp, and J. Ilency. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Tenders for the following works were opened and considered : No. 10 Contract: Cuttings near Mount Peel Station —Michael O’Brien, Ll5B 16s ; William Horsfall, L 13 0; John Brein, L 129 10s; W., Wise and Co., L 11 5; Timothy Herlihy, LllO (accepted). No. 11 Contract : Tenders being too high, were declined, fresh tenders to be invited. No. 12 Contract: Widening Embankment at the Rangitata Bridge : Francis Scrint, LlO5 (accepted). The following correspondence was read and considered; — From Mr J. Ollivier, requesting to bo furnished with information in reference to Government reserves in the district.
The Clerk was instructed to reply and | state that the Board is not in possession of j the information asked for, and the trouble of | obtaining all the information will bo consider- j able and expensive. From the Geraldine County Council, requesting to be furnished with the rateable value of the district and state of the Board’s funds for the year ending 31st March. The Clerk informed the Board that the required information had been supplied. From Mr J. L. Wilson, requesting payment of the Board’s share of expenses incurred re impounded land fund. The account w r as passed for payment. From the Crown Lands Officer, Wellington, with reference to the reserve adjoining Section 832 at Peel Forest. The Clerk was instructed to acknowledge the same with thanks. From the Registrar-General, enclosing forms for statistics to be filled up. From Messrs Packe Brothers, asking for a tracing of the proposed alteration of roads on the Raincliff run. The Clerk stated that the tracings had been sent. From the Geraldine Road Board, in reference to the Rangitata river-bed road, and stating that the Overseer has been instructed to invite tenders for the work. From Mr M. Mitton, requesting a road to be made to the freehold land on the upper Rangitata Flat. As a lino of road has not jet been surveyed it was resolved that the Chief Surveyor be written to requesting to know if cuttings made on unsurveyed land where required will be covered by road reserve on survey as has been done in this and other road districts in mountainous parts. From Mr Eugene Lorgelly, requesting that the Board make a cutting in the terrace at the end of the cross road in Peel Forest. Resolved that the Overseer report upon the work required, also" upon the extent of land sold or available for sale which will be benefittod by the road. From Mr James Watkins, in reference to the Government reserve at the Rangitata bridge. The Clerk was instructed to apply to the Steward of Public Reserves for information as to the intention of the Government with regard to the reserve at the Rangitata bridge. From the Geraldine Road Board, enclosing account for work done on the Rangitata riverbed road. The account was passed for payment. From Mr James Watkins, in reference to the temporary bridge erected by him at the Rangitata traffic bridge. Resolved that, in consideration of the great advantage derived by this district from the temporary addition to the Rangitata traffic bridge pub up by Mr Watkins, a grant of fifty pounds be made to him if the Geraldine Board will make a similar grant and the Ashburton County Council will pay the whole of their grant of £IOO at once; failing such agreement, that the grant of £SO be paid in the same proportion and at the same times as the grant by the Ashburton County Council. From the Chief Surveyor, enclosing tracing of the road in the Opihi riverbed. The Clerk was instructed to apply to the Government for a copy of the Public Reserves Act, 1877, also to state that it would bo a great convenience to the Board if the Government would forward the supplement to the gazette containing the Acts of Parliament. To write to the Ashburton County Council, asking if their engineer has reported upon the Rangitata traffic bridge and the work done by Mr Watkins, and to acquaint the Board of the nature of that report. To write to the Minister for Public Works and enquire if Road Boards have power to erect and maintain public pounds in their districts, as application has been received by the Board from ratepayers for the erection of a pound. Mr J. Talbot bad an interview with the Board relative to the alteration of road on the Raincliff Downs, when he consented to allow a road to be taken through section 27832 upon condition that the road at present surveyed through the same section be closed, and urged upon the Board the necessity of having the road opened as soon as possible. The Clerk was instructed to write to Mr King to survey the diversion of road, and if done in time, to invite tenders for the work by next Board-day. The Overseer was instructed to report upon all the roads in the district at present surveyed and not formed. To apply for gravel reserves where necessary. To have the road cleared and improved from the Orari terrace to the river bed. To invite tenders for forming the road in the Opihi river bed, near Raincliff. To invite fresh tenders for improving the road in Peel Forest. Accounts to the amount of £776 19s 5d ware passed for payment. The Board then adjourned to the third Friday in May.
