ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, April 20. The Government has intimated that it is not prepared to legislate on the Victorian difficulty until Mr Berry appeals to the country. Mr Berry believes if the Council, after an appeal, still resists , the Home Government will then act, but their mode of procedure is uncertain. Mr Berry considers a way is now open to arrive at a compromise. Sir Michael Hicks-Beach announces that the final decision will be made known in about a fortnight. The Czar has appointed special Commissioners to suppress Nihilism with the utmost rigor. Money is plentiful, and there is but slight discount demand. Business on the Stock Exchange is dull. Government debentures arc very steady ; New Zealand are at 4A Corn is quiet, and prices are unchanged.
AUSTRALIAN NEWS,
Sydney, April 21. The Hatfield bushrangers have been sentenced to death. The Judge gave out no hope of mercy, and recommended them to prepare for the worst. Melbourne, April 21. Three thousand four hundred tons of Victorian bread stuffs are loading for Callao, viz., 1800 tons of wheat and 1600 of flour. Oats are at 4s ; milling, 3s lid. The market is unaffected by the purchase of the above cargoes.
