The Temuka Leader. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 1879.
Wesleyan Church. The anniversary services of this church were conducted last Sunday by the Rev. T. Eee, of Waimate. In the morning there was a large congregation, but in the evening the church was crammed. The collections amounted to nearly L 5. We understand that an effort is being made to clear off the debt, which is nearly LSO, by subscriptions. We hope this trifling sum will be readily subscribed. “ Happy Hours.” —Mr and Mrs Hart gave their final entertainment last evening at the Volunteer Hall to a good audience. Mrs Hart’s songs and dancing were loudly and deservedly applauded, as was also Mr Hart’s varied contributions to the programme. During their short stay here, Mr and Mrs Hart have confirmed the favorable notices which have appeared in other New Zealand papers regarding their abilities. They play at Timaru this evening, and after a short stay in that town proceed to Dunedin, playing at the various places on the way. Typhoid' Fever. —This disease, says the 1 Press,’ has caused numerous deaths in Christchurch lately, and several patients arc now in the hospital suffering from it, one of whom died on Sunday last. Early Closing-. —An announcement appears in another column to the effect that a meeting of all those interested in closing their places of business will be held in the Assembly Rooms on Friday evening next. Cricket. —A match was played at Geraldine on Saturday between an eleven from Winchester and a similar number from Geraldine, which resulted in a victory to the Winchester team with one wicket and a run to spare. The total scores were—Winchester, 87 ; Geraldine, 86. Fire near Tinwald. —Three stacks of oats, the property of Mr George Hamilton, near Tinwald, which contained the entire crop from 200 acres, and had only been insured in the South British Insurance Company some twelve days before for L2OO, were burned at about twelve o’clock on Friday night. It is supposed either to have been the act of an incendiary or to have been caused by a “ swagger.”
