—o Tho usual monthly mooting of tlio Hoard took ])luco on Tuesday, 4th March. Present —McssrtT Talbot '(chairman), Hay hurst, Barker, Elisor, ami Quinn. Tho minutes of the last ordinary and one special meetings wore road and confirmed. Mr Badliam attended to explain the matter ]'C a complaint that had been made to the Board of building material being left on the public road at his place, stating that the material in question was not his property, but belonged to tho builder that was erecting his house. Mr Badhain also asked the Board to allow him- a culvert or something of tho sort over thb road drain, to enable him to get on to his land. Jlcsoivcd that Mr Badham be supplied with either timber or pipes, whichever is found most suitable for the purpose, the work to be done under the supervision of tho burvevor. . ~ , Mr Nicholson attended to ask the Board to extend tho cuttings near his place on tho Waitohi Downs. ... . Eesolved that the Surveyor visit the place and arrange with Mr Nicholson for the carry-

ing out of the work, provided the cost does not exceed L3O. Messrs Brown, Brow, and Christmas interviewed the Board to 'complain about cattle straying on the Arowhenua Township, stating that the fences around their sections were being knocked down by them, and then’ property destroyed. Resolved that the police and the poundkeeper be written to on the subject. Mr Brown also asked to have the formatian in Davis-strcet extended about five chains. Resolved that the Surveyor arrange for the extension asked for; and, further, to inform the present contractor that unless the work is proceeded with within a fortnight from date, fresh tenders will be called for the same by next Board-day, and his deposit become forfeited to the Board. PAYMENTS. The various vouchers having been examined, cheques for the, amount of £124 13s lid were passed to. be paid. With referense to a small account from the ‘ Evening Telegraph’ newspaper, which appeared to have been for an advertisement inserted by the returning officer, it was resolved that the proprietor be informed that in future no advertisements will be paid for by the Board unless such have been authorised by the Clerk. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr G. Dyson, poundkeeper, complaining of the dilapidated condition of the pound. Ordered that fresh tenders be called for building a new pound, and that Messrs Hayhurst and Quinn form a sub-committee to examine the plans, &c., already prepared for the purpose of modifying them if found requisite. From Mr Gladstone, re deviation of road through his property, offering to sell the land for £IOO, provided the road in question is carried along by the gorsc fence. Resolved that Mr Gladstone’s offer be accepted, and the Surveyor bo instructed to survey the road and have the matter arranged at once. From Mr C. Bissett, drawing the attention of the Board to their resolution re opening a road from Mr Shaw’s to the Mill Road through the Barker Trust land. Ordered that a reply be sent to Mr Bissett explaining that the delay has occurred through the necessary survey not having been completed, but that the Board will endeavor to have the work pushed on with all dispatch. From Mr George Edgar, stating ho had sold the land the valuer had assessed him for to Mr Gamack, and ho was not therefore liable to be rated. Resolved that Mr Edgar be referred to the Assessment Court, to sit on the 12th inst. From the Treasury, Wellington, advising having forwarded through the Bank of New r Zealand to the credit of the Board the sum of L 1713 5s 3d from land fund of County to end of December, 1678. From manager Bank of New Zcalann, advising that the above sum had been received and placed to the credit of the Board. From Colonial Secretary’s Office, re application of local bodies for extension of time under section 68 of the Eating Act. From Geraldine Road Board, re subsidis-

ing and establishing a ferry near the Rangitata Traffic Bridge. Resolved that the same be agreed to by this Board for one year, and to bo continued permanently if found on trial to be of public utility. A letter was read from Messrs G-ibson and Maslin, asking the Board to reduce the 25ft. length timber to I f or 16 inches. The Board agreed to reduce it as follows : —The 26 feet lengths to 16 x 6, and the 20 feet lengths to 16 x 6. From Mr C. Sherratt, asking for a payment on account, of valuing the district. Resolved that in consequence of the Board being dissatisfied with the valuation roll they decline to pay anything until after the sitting of the Assessment Court, and the visiting book in the valuator’s possession is inspected by the Board. From Ashburton County Council re ferry- | man at the Rangitata. Resolved that|a :Copy of the resolution of the Board as passed this day be forwarded to Ashburton County Council. OFrom Secretary' Timaru Harbor Board in orencc to supplying that Board with the names o<f the gentlemen that may have been elected as members. The Clerk explained that ho had, since the receipt of the letter, supplied the Timaru Harbour Board with the name of the gentleman that had been elected to represent this district on their Board. Proposed by Mr Barker, seconded by Mr Hayhurst, and carried, that the Chairman or someone appointed by him, appear at the Assessment Court on behalf of the Board to object to the Assessment Roll, as it has not bcvm carried out in accordance with then.' instructions, especially in reference to the assessment of the town lands in the Temuka district. Resolved that the Clerk prepare a form of voucher, also get a solicitor to prepare a contract form, and submit the same for approval at next sitting of the Board. Resolved that the survey of all deviation of roads authorised by the Board be attended to at once. Resolved that the Clerk collect the halfyear rent now due from the poundkeeper. The Chairman stated that he had been requested by Dr Raynor to ask consent of the Board to have a small cupboard put up in the office for the convenience of keeping papers connected with his office as health officer. Resolved that there is no necessity for acceding to the request of the health officer at. present. Resolved that a footbridge be put over the Mill Road Creek. Resolved that the Surveyor take the necessary steps to compel farmers to clear gorse growing on the side of roads. Resolved that fresh tenders be called for repairs to Board room and offices, and the same bo lined with wood instead of plaster. The Overseer’s report having been read and considered the following works u ere ordered to bo done : The road applied for by Mr McCallum, with bridge on the same. Specifications and plans to be prepared by next Board day. The work arranged by the Surveyor to bo carried out by Messrs Stangcr and Fletcher was agreed to. ■ The timber ordered by the Surveyor from Messrs Gibson and Maslin was approved of. The culvert put across a road at Milford that had been applied for by McLavery was approved of. Ordered that fresh places be prepared for building a bridge ovar Langridge’s Greek, to be carried at right angles to the road. The footbridge prorosed to be put across the Temuka river at Real’s to be referred to sub-committce. Tenders to be called for forming approaches to Low’s bridge on the Swamp road. Specifications to bo prepared to be laid before the Board at their next meeting for carrying out certain works on the Lower Swamp Road, running past McKenzie’s, in accordance with recommendations of the surveyor. In re embankment across Badham’s road, the Surveyor was instructed to inspect and report on the matter. Matter of culverts at Winchester was deferred. The Surveyor was instructed to have the large stones broken on the centre of the road near Macdonald’s wool shed.

The Survevor having reported favorably on the fords made by Mr Hayhurst across certain roads the same was approved of by the Board. Specifications to be prepared fmj forming footpaths in Allnutt street and laid before the Board atKheinnext meeting. The Board'then adjourned.
