G 9 Speaking of the play in the first match, the Dunedin ‘ Morning Herald’ says ; The play during the match has shown that the Otago batsmen all lack bitting power, as they repeatedly only played at half-volleys instead of driving them to the boundary. Their defence is goad, but this is comparatively of little use unless it is combined with the power to punish a loose ball when it does come. The fielding of both sides was good, but the return to the wicket by iho Otago men was not so good as it should have been on many occasions. It is somewhat singular that in the Otago first innings GO overs and 3 balls were bowled for 77 runs, while in their second, GO overs and 1 ball were delivered for 74 runs, a result which shows that the scores made arc about the average the team would make on the Canterbury ground. The bowling of Ashby, Frith, and Turner in both innings was very good, while for Otago Paramor was in line form, especially at the commencement of the innings. THE AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN.
