GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
A special meeting of the Board was held on Monday, October 28th, in the Road Board office, Geraldine. Present ; Messrs Postleth waito (Chairman), Slack, and Tripp. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.
Mr J. Sugrue wiiitecl upon the Board to ask for an extension of time of a fortnight to complete his contract near the Orari. The request was granted. The Chairman explained what he had done in the matter of the severance of the district, and why he had called the Board together. He then read the following telegram ; — u Government Buildings, Wellington, 22nd Oct., 1878. W. Postlethwaite, Esq., Chairman Geraldine Road Board. Think following dates will meet your case. Proclamation signed 28th November, gazetted 21st. Governor appoints Saturday, sth January, for elections, being forty-three clear days from re-constitution of districts. Telegraph any objection that suggests itself to you. Signed, G. S. Cooper/’
The Chairman said that he had telegraphed that those dates would suit very well.
It was resolved that the action of the chairman be approved of, and that the telegram be published in full.
The action of the chairman and Mr Flatman re the construction of a temporary bridge in the Orari river bed was approved of. Mr South having applied to have a drain near his place re-diverted, it whs resolved that the application cannot be entertained. It was resolved to reduce the rent of the immigrants’ cottages to 8s per week, to be paid monthly, and that the collector should issue notices to quit to any tenant whose rent is not paid within fourteen days after it becomes due. Mr Millard having attached a shop to one of these cottages, it was resolved to call upon him to pay the difference between the insurance premiums on a shop and a private house.

Letters wei’e read and considered as follows •
From Mr White, solicitor, Timaru, en-' closing a legal opinion on the question of the Boards taking over private roads. From Mr Hay, explaining the reason of his absence, and bringing before the attention of the Board the necessity to have the road just above Meredith’s, leading over the Waitohi Powns, formed. It was resolved—“ That the Clerk write to Messrs Studholrae, Banks, and Wiglcy, that the pegs must be placed on the roadway without delay, as application is made to have the road formed, and the overseer is instructed to report upon the road.”
From Sir Thomas Tancred, dated 24th October, informing the Board that he had received the price of compensation for the purchase of road through rural sections 2254 md 2255. From the Governor Canterbury College, dated 3rd October, granting permission to the Board to place pipes under the surface of section 69b for drainage puiposes, upon the understanding thru they be removed when asked to do so by the Governor of the Canterbury College. The Clerk was instructed to acknowledge receipt of the same. From Mr James P. Wilson, dated 30th September, drawing the attention of the Board to the bad state of the road near the foot of the Downs. From Messrs Russell and Cochrane, dated 14th October, notifying their willingness to allow a road to run through their land. It was resolved —“That the overseer attend to the work at once, and call for tciidcrs From Mr H. Hesketh, requesting the Board to form the road leading towards Beautiful Valley. It was resolved —“That the overseer report upon the same.” From Mr Whittaker, drawing the attention of the Board to the road leading through the R;mkapiika hush. Resolved : That the Board at present do not see the necessity of forming the road.
From Mr Shaw, enclosing his account. Resolved : That the account be paid. From the ’ Secretary to the Treasury, dated October 13, informing the Board of the sum of £459 Os lid, for credit of the district fund account, being 50 per cent, of the subsidy upon the receipt of rates. Resolved : That the Clerk write to inform Mr White that the road diverted through R.S. 2254 and 2255 has been conveyed to the Queen. Mr South here waited upon the Board with reference to the matter of drainage before mentioned, asking to have the creek diverted to run down the side of the road instead of through his garden, as at present. Resolved : That the overseer report upon it. It was resolved that the Cleric write to Mr Whittaker, asking for payment for timber taken off the road, and giving him notice not to take any more. The overseer’s report was read and considered.
Resolved : That the Board sanction the overseer’s arrangement for extra work in Braoefield’s contract, and that Mr Wilkinson be allowed to hand over his contract to Mr A. Reid.
Be Orari bridge repairs, the overseer to arrange with ITepworth to carry out the contract at once, or tenders to be called for ; that the bridge near Lewis’s is not required ; tenders to be called for repairing Beckham’s bridge, and for repairing, tarring, and re-painting the Geraldine traffic bridge ; that the work on Curran’s road stand over; (hat the overseer arrange with Collet re land ; that the work let°to Bracefield and Hopkinson be app loved. Mr Sherrat presented an account for drafting petition, and obtaining signatures to the same, re severance of district.
Resolved : That the same be paid. Proposed by Mr Slack, and seconded by Mr Fiatma'n, “ That Mr W. Skiers be appointed collector of rates, and Mr C. E. Sherrat sub-collector, for the Geraldine Road District.” Accounts 1o the amount of £1246 15s were passed for payment. The Board then adjourned until Thursday, 21st instant, at 10 a.ra.
