At a sitting of the Supreme Court today, the case of the Avon Road Board v. the Colonial Treasurer, better known as the Land Fund case, was adjourned to the 12th prox, when the Attorney-General has signified his intention of being present to argue on behalf of the Government. The Mayor and Councillors of Dunedin will be present at the Mayor’s banquet, Christchurch, on the occasion of the opening of the railway from one place to the other. It is expected that other municipalities will also be present. It is being reported about town that a scandal of a very unpleasant character will be brought to light in a few days. Our approaching civic elections are Itkely to be lively. There is already a good field of candidates.

Three engines and three carriages have been running all day on the tramway. The carriages were full each way. Over twelve hundred people travelled on the tramway up to 3 o’clock. Horses shied a little occasionally, but no accident occurred.
The Wellington Racing Glnb to-night removed the disqualification from Fishhook, and his rider Derritt. The programme for the next meeting will be published in a few days. Christchurch, Aug 26.
At a numerously attended meeting, held at Amberley on Saturday night, it was resolved to urge upon the Government the necessity of continuing the railway line from that place to the Mest Coast, and also of setting apart reserves along the line of route to pay for the expense of the same. John Reynolds was to-day committed for trial on a charge of incendiarism at Courtney,
The Railway Department intend to open offices in town for the sale of railway tickets on the American system. The Railway Commissioner intends to visit America early next year, in order to obtain a practical insight into the working of the American lines.
The through train from Christchurch to Dunedin, with the members of both Houses, and a body of invited guests, will leave here at 6 o’clock on Friday morning, tne 6th inst., and is to arrive at Dunedin at 6 o’clock the same evening. Tlxe actual time of travelling will be about ten hours, allowing two hours for stoppages. Dunedin, Aug 26.
The ceremony of linking the last rail on the Dunedin and Christchurch Him took place to-day between Waikouaiti and Palmerston, in the presence of 200 people. The ceremony was performed by Mr Blair, assisted by Miss Macandrew and the Mayor of Dunedin. A lunch took place afterwards. Arrangements are to be made for holding a grand annual musical competition in Dunedin.
Thanksgiving services for the preservation of peace were held in all the Dunedin Anglican churches yesterday. Invercargill, Aug. 26 About fourteen pounds of quartz, both fine and coarse, the refuse of prospecting trials of Hare Bros, reef, was brought to town to-day. Portions of it were pulverised .n a mortar, and washed out at the Club Hotel, the gold obtained indicating a general return of 12oz to the ton.
