GERALDINE.

(from our own correspondent, j

An inquest was held on Saturday, Aug. 10th, on the body of an infant child named Mary Hooper, whose parents reside in Geraldine. The child, who was onlj’ - three months old, had been in delicate health since its birth, had suddenty become worse, wbeh Dr Fish was sent for, but bei g away upon professional duty at the time could not attend, and the child quickly expired. Upon post mortem examination by Dr Fish it was ascertained that the child had been suffering from a pevere state of inflammation of the lungs. The jury therefore returned a verdict accordingly. The Polygraphic Company gave their entertainment at the Oddfellows’ Hall, Geraldine, on Monday and Tuesday evenings last to well-filled houses, and, to judge from the applause given, great satisfaction must have been the result. Several encores were demanded and kindlv granted. Messrs Allan and Riley for their finished step dancing deserve all praise. I have seldom had the pleasure of witnessing more artistic step dancing, and with such precision of time, in New Zealand, the champion pedestal dance particularly. The Irish songs in character were, good, but we cannot say so much for the party who sung the sentimental items. This latter might be better left out. The afterpiece, “ Office of Intelligence,” was a most amusing negro farce, and brought down the house with roars of laughter, the characters being well sustained. Dancing was afterwards kept up by the audience until the early hours of the morning. In the Resident Magistrate’s Court on August 14. before A. Le G. Campbell, Esq., R.M., an assault case from Peel

Forest, W. , Horsefall v. H. Mills-, was tried. Defendant was fined 10s and costs. In two civil cases, Mendelsnn v. Stokes, claim £3 ss, and same y. Cunningham, claim £4 10s 4d, judgment was given for plaintiffs, with costs and solicitor’s fees. A number of other casee were settled out of Court.
