CORRESPONDENCE.
—«- [We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed bj our eorre.<> pundents.] —Or-? TO THE EDITOR OF THE " TEMTTKA LEADER." Sir, —C.n you inform me why tlio Epworth bridge, near Holloway's, is allowed to remain in su<h a dangerous state as it is at present ? Many of the planks are broken, or have been wantonlypulled up, so that persons going over the j bridge at night, being ignorant of its state, would be very likely to break their legs or suffer some other, perhaps worse, accident. I hope that the Temuka Road Board will see to it at once before any accident does happen. And if, as I believe, planks have been maliciously pulled up, I hopft they will try to find out who did it, and cause them to be properly punished. ..", I remain, <fcc, "•'> A Resident. Tenmka. July 29. '*
[ln reply to the question with which our correspondent commences his letter ~ we can only suggest that the bridge is ''■. allowed to remain in a dangerous state ; because the Road Board are unaware of ;• its condition. The bridge certainly is '"'•■: dangerous ; a great deal of responsibility ,'•) rests upon one particular piece of board, I which is certainly unfit to be trusted. ■■• The whole bridge needs re-decking, and..' '■'*. we should prefer to see some other mate- ■-■'. rial than one-inch white pine boards used ': in the work. We desire to deprecate charges of malicious destruction ; the more so, perhaps, because we felt strongly inclined to wilfully put our., heel through the piece of board we have referred to, with the good intention of saving another doing it accidentally and fallingiu consequence. We think it were bettor for , > those who see anything requiring atten- <-'! tion at the hands of any executive body -\ to communicate in the first instance ~] directly with that body, and not indirectly ; I through the press. Overseers to Road .<! Boards, for instance, are not Arguses—■ ,'■ cannot see all things in all pi ice< —out we "■ have no doubt that if'their attention is \m called to anything of tuis kind it will seen to.—Ed. T.
