Holding of Band Solo Championship For Boys Sought
Application to the Taranaki Brass and Pipe Bands' Association for permission to hold a Taranaki boys' solo championship is to be made by the citizen's committee of the Hawera Municipal band. It is hoped to hold the contest at Hawera in November, and it will be open to boys from all parts of Taranaki. Medals for first and second prizes will be contributed by the New Zealand Brass Bands' Association. On the recommendation of the conductor of the Hawera band, Mr. H. C- A. Fox, a suggestion was made to the New Zealand association by the committee that, with a view to encouraging young players, a New Zealand solo championship should be held. The secretary, Mr. L. O. Hooker, jeported to a meeting of the citizen's committee last night that the association commended the suggestion, but considered it impracticable under existing circumstances. _ The basic idea of providing a competition for the encouragement of young players was, however, approved, and it was suggested that the Hawera committee seek per-. mission from the lo'cal association to hold such a competition in Taranaki. The championship would be open to soloists aged 17 years and under, and they would have a choice of any brass instruments, it was decided last night. The organisation of the contest and the appointment of a judge were left to Mr. Fox, who will be assisted by a subcommittee. Problems concerning transport and the possible need to biliet contestants were also discussed, and they will be dealt with if permission to hold the contest is gained.
