Complaints Made About Cruelty To Bobby Calves
As a result of complaints made to the New Plymouth S.P.C.A. about cruelty in the handling of bobby calves, the chief inspector, Mr. T. Davies, has stated that during the cold weather all lorries carting calves should have some sort of cover to protect the young animals. A member of the S.P.C.A. said that he had received several complaints tbout the manner in which calves were being loaded into trucks. "They were being thrown in like sacks of flour," he said, "with no thought of how they landed." He had had to ask some of the truckers to see that the calves were up on their legs, because some of the calves had had their legs broken. He knew that time was a factor in' loading the calves. and that it was a difficult job, but he felt sure that more care could be taken.
