First Hawera Woman Leaves to Join W.R.N.S.

The first Hawera woman to be called up for the Women's Royal Naval Service, Miss Dorothy Pinson, left Hawera yesterday to start duty in the canteen section. Miss Pinson volunteered in May, was examined about two weeks ago, and received her notice to report for duty last Saturday. , Miss Pinson, who is the daughter oi Mr. and Mrs. F. Pinson, is well-known at Hawera as a teacher of the violin. She has always been prominent in Hawera musical circles and is librarian and a first violinist of the Hawera Orchestral Society. _ She- took classes in string instrument instruction at the Hawera Main school and recently at the Tawhiti school. Miss Pinson also took part in the activities of the Hawera Methodist Church as a member of the choir and a Bible class_ leader. A large crowd of friends and pupils farewelled her at the railway station yesterday morning. when presentations were made by Mr. F. C. Foden on behalf of the orchestral society, ■ and by Mrs. R. Thayer on behalf of the Bible class. Floral tributes were also presented on behalf of the Methodist choir. The Mayor, Mr. L. H. Clapham, was unable to be present at the station, but earlier he called at Miss Pinson's home to farewell her.
