Death of Old Identity Occurs at Hawera

One of the oldest of Hawera identities, Mrs. Charlotte Louisa Squire, who has lived at Hawera for 62 years, died at her home in Disraeli Street on Sunday at the age of 78 years. She was a regular attender at services of the Hawera Metjhodist Church from as early as 1880, and until recently she played a prominent part in the activities of the church. Mrs. Squire was born at Wanganui and at the age of 16 years came to Hawera and later married the late Mr. R. J. Squire. She was a member of the Hawera Methodist Church and saw the erection of the second church, now the Wesley Hall, and the present church erected in 1905. Mrs. Squire gave service in almost all departrnents of church actiVity, including the choir, the Sunday school and mission and guild work. She was prominent also in the Hawera branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union and outside the church m many movements for the betterment of humanity. Mr. Squire died in 1933 and their eldest son, Mr. Allan Squire, was killed on Gallipoli in 1915. Surviving Mrs. Squire are two sons, Messrs. M. J. Squire (Hawera) and K. B. Squire (Hamilton), and two daughters, Mesdames S. Maunder (Wellington) and F. Baker (Hawera). There are nine grand-children.
