Manaia Fire Brigade

Present membership of the Manaia Fire Brigade was 17, including nine members in the armed forces, it was reported by the superintendept, Mr. T. Dowdle, at the annual meeting. The chairman of the Manaia Town Board, Mr. J. A. G. Cosgrove, who presided, referred to the brigade's work in the year, and made special reference to the good work of the superintendent. A conference heid by the United Fire Brigades' Association at Wellington was attended by the superintendent. The secretary, Mr. W. Budd. gained a gold star for 25 years' service in the Manaia brigade. Mr. J. Kendall joined the brigade again to assist during the war. Reference was made to social events orgapised by Mrs. Bul] in aid of the brigade. Officers eiected were: Superintendent, Mr. Dowdle: deputy superintendent, Mr. A. J. Baldwin : first branchman, Mr. G. Nuku ; second branchman, Mr. M. Clark ; hydman, Mr. ' W. Budd: foreman, Mr. E. Gillbanks; secretary and treasurer, Mr. W. Budd. Fireman J. Kendail was presented by Mr. Cosgrove with three service bars, bringing his total service to 21 years. Three-year certificates were presented to Messrs. E. Gillbanks, G. Nuku and H. Houghton. Toasts honoured were: The King, Superintendent Dowdle ; united fire brigades, Mr. A. Melville — Superintendent Dowdle : Manaia Fire Brigade, Mr. J. Hickey — Superintendent Dowdle ; local bodies, Mr. Budd — Mr. Cosgrove; armed forces, Mr. J. Kendail— Mr. W. Badland. Sunday School Concert. A concert was given by children of the Presbyterian Sunday school at Manaia. There was a large attendance. Miss M. Armitage was in charge. After the concert Mr. L. Hoddart, on behalf of the congregation, presented a silver tea service to Mrg. N. Innes, in recognition of her 25 years' service to the choir. A letter referring to Mrs. Innes" service from the Rev. R. Miller, who is R\vay on military duties, was read. Mr.- J. Mitchell, of the church committee, also spoke. Supper was served by women of the congregation.
