Only one win favourite scored at the Taranaki and Egmonl-Wanganui Hunt Clubs' combined one-day race meeting at Hawera on Saturday, which was held in line weather. Hastings horses fllled the flrst two places in the Combined Hunt Cup Steeplechasc, Indian Sun. runncr-un in the Pakuranga Hunt C'jp, heating Smoogcr, runner-up in Ihe Huntcrs' Steeplechasc. The. New Ply-mouih-owned Aussie Ra was third. A chnpter of accidents in the flrst round reduced the field from len to flve, F. C. C.leaver, rider of Glcn Abb, being taken lo hospilal. The course, though heavy after recent ralns, was in good order. All evcnts were ruri without divisions, the scratehings in one case being just sufficient. The totalisator handled £21,916 10s, eompared with £22,923 on the Saturday at New Plymouth last year, an increase of £1993 10s. The judtcial committce met onoe when an owner was flncd for not having notilied a joint interest in a horsc. When calling on Mrs. D. Lupton, wife of the president of the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club, to present the trophies Ihe Mastcr, Dr. W. T. Simmons, referred to Ihe fnrmers who had given thc clubs the use of their properties during the season. Colossal Chief Finishes Strongly. Always well placed the Awapuni-tralned Colossal Chief finished strongly to win the Haek and Huntcrs' Hurdle race. Majorlty and Moko Moko led the field of sevpn over the first half milc, when Moko Moko ran to the front and led along the back from Majorlty, Inventor, Colossal Chief and Town Survey, with Pekoc and Vitement well back. Moko Moko, Town Survey and Colossal Chief were almost on terms over Ihe last fcnce, Majorlty (lropping back, hut in the run home Colossal Chief prevailed. Majority was fourth, followed by Inventor, with Vitement well back. The favourite, Pekoe, jumpcd poorly throughout and finished last. Water Hound All the Way. Jumping away smartly from a hig Held of 28, the Waikato-traincd Water Hound • led air thc way and paid double figurcs in the Wereroa Stakes. Enlarge, Plato Lad, Platinum Wings, Peter's Choice, Skipper Gay and i lng Scarf Were the leader's closest atlendants from the barrier-rise, hut once the field settlcd down Water Hound established a two-lengths lead from Enlarge, with Plato Lad a length away, followed by Skipper Gay, Peter's Choice and Ring Scarf. Water Hound Jed into the straight from Plato Lad, Enlarge and Ring Scarf, with Skipper Gay, Skydonna and Cauda Lux togelher. Water Hound wcnt on to win comfortahly from Plato Lad. After Ring Scarf came Cauda Lux, Platinum Wings, Skydonna, Jonathan Jo, Enlarge, Kcen Play and Fox Queen.

Broireine Wins Well. Always well placed the New Plymouthowned Broivclne finished' strongly in the Waihi Hack Handicap. Lady Virginia was quiekest out from Aguilo, Come True, Broiveine, Deolali, Pongi and Gitana Lass. Deolali went to the front at the half mile and lcd from Auburn Lad, Broiveine, Pongi, Aguilo, Lady Virginia, Come True and Sir Fox. Approaching Ihe top Auburn Lad had charge from Deolali, Pongi, Broiveine, Sir Fox, Aguilo, War Credit and Lady Virginia. Broiveine was running second at the straight entrance, with Sir Fox liand.v. Half-way up the. straight Broiveine took the lead and held off a challenge by Sir Fox. Golden Acre finished fast for third and then caine Come True, Bunsby, Pongi and Aguilo. Indian Sun in Close Finish. Well ridden, the Hastings-owned Indian Sun, a hot favourite, took the lead half a mile from the post and staved off a strong claim hy Smooger in the Combined Hunt Cup Steeples. Huirangi's Prlde, the early pace-maker, established a lead ot 1 eight or nine lengths along the back and led into the straight Ihe first time froni Dorado and Indian Sun, with Smooger two lengths away and Aussie Ra three lengths farther back. Seven furlongs from home Huirangi's Pride was just cjear of Indian Sun. with Dorado two lengths awa.v and similar distances separating Smooger and Aussie Ra. Huirangi's Pride began to drop back half a mile from home, where liKUan Sun assumed command from Smooger, Dorado, Aussie Ra and Huirangi's Pride. Aussie Ra drew up to the leuders approaching the last fence, where Dorado drifled back. A thrilling duel • up the straight saw Indian Sun beat Smooger, with Aussie Ra, Dorado jmd Huirangi's Pride the only others to finish. In the flrst round Gleh Abb and Sir Col fell, Abbe.v Lu lost his rider and Blue Steel and Rnkete were pulled up.

Sanction Surprises. The Trenlham-traincd Sanction paid double figures for a win in the Halcombe Memorial Handicap. Gold Dale, the early pace-maker, was one and a-half lengths clear of Circular Note at the six furlongs, .with Alexcelia and Dai*k EafSle next, lollowed by Sanction, Windsor Chief, Minority and Student Prince last. Gold Dale gave place to Circular Note at the halfmile, with Alexcelia and Sanction next, followed by Minority. Student Prince was still last and Circular Note led across the top and into the straight from -Minority, with Sanction coming fast and Alexcelia and Dark Eagle next. A great struggle between the leading trio followed, Sanction flnishing strongly and heating Circular Note, with Minority, a hot both-ways favourite, third. Then came Student Prince, flnishing fast. Alexcelia, Dark Eagle and Windsor Chief. Gold Dale bled badly and finished last. Necklace to Hokumai. Ilokumai, ridden by Mr. N. Davidson, and Beau Monde, ridden by Mr. Ii. MoK. Duncan, winncr and runner-up in the Ladies' Bracelet on the flrst day at New Plymouth last year, again staged a thrilling duel and fllled the same positions in Ihe Ladies' Necklace this year. Last Match was flrst out from Lu Chang, Regal Reign, Hokumai and Min Yaals, hut after two furlongs Regal Reign and Eeau Monde were in the lead from Sir Col, Min Vaals, Hokumai, Venture, Last Match and Lu ('.hang, with Abbey Lu, who missed Ihe jump-.out, last. Regal Reign and Bcuu Monde were a length and a-half clear of Hokumai at the six furlongs, followed by Sir Col, I^ist Match, Min Vaals and Venture. with Lu Chang last. Hokumai ran to the front and at the half-mile was three lengths clear of Beau Monde, with Venture next. followed hy Last Match. That

was Ihe order into Ihe slraighl, where a great finish saw Hokumai beat Beau Monde, Last Match getting up to beat Venture by a nose. Then came Abbey Lu, Sir Col and Regal Reign. Noble Fox Wins Comfortably. The New Plymouth-trained Noble Fox scored a comfortable win in the Stratford Handicap and returned a double figure win dividend. Scrcen Star jumpcd out best from a field of nine and led at the half-mile from Noble Fox, with Saxon Tor and Black Benarde together next and Duncannon moving up. Mounlain Fox was last. Sereen Star began to drop back, and at thc two furlongs Noble Fox held command from Duncannon and Saxon Tor, with Bodcn Park and Sereen Star togetlnfi* nexl. There was little alteration to the posl, Noble Fox xvinning and Saxon Tor following Duncannon. Next were Boden Park, Mountain Fox, Par Avion and Trig Station.

Deolali went on to beat Golden Acre, who beat Voltaire and paid its second place dividend that day. Then came Sunblaze, War Effort, Betterman and Clarice. Plalo Boy came down, flnishing without a bridle and bleeding. His jockey, W. Rcid, escaped with a sluiklng.
