A newspaperman asked Secretary of State Cordell Hull whether a current magazine was correct in quoting him as describing former Foreign Minister Yosuke Matsuoka as "crooked as a basket of fish-hooks." The sedate secretary, in his usual impassionate tone, replied that he would prefer to have used stronger language but had decided to restrain
