No Alteration In Shop Window Lighting Allowed
Improved street lighting was permitted under the amended lighting regulations, but no alteration could be made to shopwindow lighting the lighting controller, Mr. J. Lythgoe, informed a meeting of controllers of the Hawera Emergency Precautions Serviees on Thursday night. Quoting instructions received from the Dominion lighting controller, and exhibiting a map on which areas classified as coastal were marked, Mr. Lythgoe said that the map showed clearly that the coastal area extended inland for 12 miles, and as far as the South Taranaki district was concerned almost included Eltham. The street lights could be increased, but no alterations could be made to existing shop-window lighting. All that was done at Hawera was to conform with the regulations. Some street lights threw a light on the ground 22 yards in radius, said the chairman, Mr. L. H. Clapham, while others were only 10 yards in radius. "We have been stumbling about in darkness for two years, and it seems absurd to me," said Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P. He added that Wellington was much better lighted than Hawera. "If something is not done soon we will have a serious accident," declared. Mr. J. W. Harding. "You can put up more lights if the borough council will pay for them, but you cannot increase the candle power?" asked Mr. L. A. Ablett, and. Mr. Lythgoe agreed. He added that there were not sufficient street lights at Hawera to 1 create a sky-glow. "I think our main street lighting is the worst in New Zealand," declared Mr. Clapham. •Mr. Lythgoe: I don't think so.
