Greengrocers Fined For Over-Charging for Potatoes
Press Assn.
Wellington, Aug. 28.
Four greengrocers were fined £7 10s each by Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M.. today, and a fifth was fined £4, on Price Tribunal prosecutions for selling potatoes at a greater price than permitted. Mr. Goulding refused to heed defence submissions of what he termed more or less technical objections. Counsel submitted that the cost of the potatoes had not been proved, nor in what area the potatoes were bought, by the inspectors, different prices being fixed for different localities. Addressing the court on the question of penalty, counsel contended that the regulations were unreasonable and confusing.
