Food Production. Whatever auxiliary schemes were pu1 uhder way to bring about an increase in the production of foodstuffs in New Zealand, the work of the commercial growers rernained of flrst importance, said Captairi B. V. Cooklsley, representative of the Minister of Primary Production for War Purposes, the Hon. W. J. Polson, in addressing a meeting at Auckland. The department was determined to discover what problems faced the growers and to do its utmost to solve them. Women Fail to Report. Reporting to the North Canterbury Hospital Board on the efforts of the manpower officer to assist in the provision of staff, the chairman, Mr. L. B. Evans, said 38 young women had been directed to go to the hospital for interviews. Of those only 31 attended. Eight commenced work, but two walked out after a day or two and one was withdrawn. The remainder had not reported for duty. The manpower officer was in possession of the facts, and no doubt some action would be taken.
