Trees Planted In Honour Of 15 Inglewood Men
In commemoration of 15 Inglewood men who have died on active service during the year, 14 weeping elms were planted at the annual tree-planting cereI mony at Inglewood yesterday. | So far, 18 men from the district have died on service. Last year, the idea of planting a tree in memory of each man was instituted, and three weeping elms were planted close to the main highway in the Railway Reserve Park in memory of the late Messrs. V. Arthur. L. Arnold and N. Lovell. The trees planted yesterday were in commemoration of Messrs. V. J. M. Arthur. A. H. Benny. J. A. Cartwright, R. H. Crush, D. B. Dodunski, A. A. Gannaway, J. D. Gibson. I. C. Grant.,E. H. Green, B. C. Hudson. C. G. Knofflock, C. R. Smeaton, H. M. Stimpson, E. B. Whittaker and R. P. Wilson. A tree was not planted in memory of V. J. M. Arthur, but, when Rjaced in position, the plaque at the tree planted last year in memory of V. Arthur will «Uso bear the name of his sonAlthough the weather was boisterous, there was a representative gathering, those present including the Mayor, Mr. R. W. Brown. the town clerk, Mr. J. A. Ross, the county chairman, Mr. W. R. Moir, the county clerk, Mr. T. A. Jones, the president of the Inglewood R.S.A., Mr. W. J. Smith, the president of the Inglewood branch of the Red Cross Society, Mrs. I. F. Franks. and the Rev. C. Oliver, Methodist minister. Business premises were closed during the ceremony. Arbor Day could not more fittingly be celebrated than by the planting of trees
to the memory of those men who had died, said Mr. Brown. The men died in the faith and hope that they were fighting for the right— the right that those in this beautiful country might live their lives unmolested, he continued. They 1 died willingly. but those who were left behind had the responsibilitv of proving that the men had not died in vain. Mr. Moir said he did not think the men would want their death to be mourned indefinitely, but would prefer that those left would carry on in the hope that the war would end soon, and that they would play their part in building a better world.
