Good Brood Mare Dies
It is possible that one of our recent expensive earthquakes was responsible for thc death of the good brood mare Hinearoha. On the day following one of the shnkcs Hinearoha was found in her paddock with a leg brokcn. Horses are sensible of the approach of earthquakes and becorae very excited. It is thought ihat Hinearoha must have been galloping about in a frlghlened condition when the fracturc occurred. She was destroyed. Hinearoha was 24 ycar» old. She was the property of Mr. V. E. Bryant, Foxton, but was bred by Mr. R. Heppner. She was by Boniform from Lady Laddo, dam oi Uouen, who won the Thompson Handicap and the New Zealand Cup. Lady Laddo was by Sir Laddo from Possibility, by The Possible. Hinearpha's flrst foal was the useful Maui, by Arrowsmlth. Repartee, by Gashag, followed, and then came Arikira, by Limond. Arikira was a good horse troubled by sorencss. Pheon, Rustem, Charmante, Triple Crown and Athenian were others of her family. Triple Crown, who is by Wherlko, ran third In the principal flat race at the Rangitikel-Manawatu Hunt Club meeting last month and competed unsuccessfully at the recent Grand National meeting, though her efforts were by no means discouraglng.
