Proportion of Appeals In Ballot Is 60 Per Cent.
Wellington, Aug. 27. Though comparative figures are not available about the number of appeals resulting from all recent ballots for military service, the marked diminution of available manpower in industry is reflected in the percentage of appeals from the latest ballot compared with those from the initial territorial ballots. About 25 per cent. of the reservists were appealed [or in the early ballots, but the figure has soared in the meantime to approximately 60 per cent. in the last ballot gazetted. It is generally conceded that men in the age groups now being called are in positions of greater responsibility and have had a wider trade experience than the younger men called in the early ballots. However, the complexion and character of industry has altered markedly in recent months and the change over from non-essential to essential manufacturing has made it necessary for employers, in the interests of production, to appeal for men who would not have been viewed as key men in the circumstanees previously ruling. Sixteen ballots have been gazetted, five being speciflcally for overseas service. Of the remainder 10 related to territorial service, and the ballot published on June 24 was for general service in the armed forces.
