Important Gains Against Japanese Claimed by China
Rec. 11.30 p.m. Chungking, Aug. 24. The Central News reports that the Chinese recaptured Changshan, 25 miles north-west of Chuhsien. The Chinese are converging on Chuhsien from the east and the north-east. It is officially announced that the Chinese have captured Linchwan, the second most important Japanese base in central Kiangsi. A military spokesman said that Japanese forces were driven from 11 important towns during last week, retreating to Manchukuo like hungry dogs, fatigued, starved, sick and so short of munitions that they cannot fight even a rearguard action. Guerrilla activities have deprived the Japanese of food and munitions. Supplies have played an important part in the enemy's collapse. The American bombing of Japanese targets has boosted Chinese morale. A Chungking communique says that Chinese troops reoccupied the main Japanese base in the enemy's western drive through Chekiang province. The main body of the Chir.ese are moving north in pursuit. The Chinese have captured more strategic points near the KiangsiChekiang' border. Marshal Chiang Kai-shek has sent a message to the Chinese Expeditionary Force in India paying a high tribute to their excellent conduct in the Burma campaign. He called on them not to criticise or discuss India's politics! affairs.
