Funeral of Mr. T. Maruera

The funeral of Mr. Tupito Maruera at Pariroa was one of the largest Maori funerals seen in the Patea district. Mr. Maruera was well known in both. the North and South Islands for his work on behalf of the Maori people. As chairnian of the Taranaki Maori Trust Board Mr. Maruera performed many services for his people, meeting houses and dining rooms being erected in various parts by the trust board during his chairmanship. He was also chairman of the Taranaki Maori Council, and for some time a Methodist minister. He was chief of his tribe, Ngati Tupito Ngati Hine. For many years he was noted for his speeches and Maori chants.
