Breaches of Traffic And Car Lighting Regulations

Breaches of traffic and car lighting regulations were brought before Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., in the New Plymouth Police Coufrt yesterday morning, several motorists being convicted. For attempting to overtake another vehicle at the intersection of Devon and Normanby Streets on July 28, Hugh John Maunsell, a private in the army, who pleaded guilty, was fined 30s (costs 10s). The two vehicles, a lorry carrying metal, and an army truck driven by Maunsell, were travelling west from the Waiwakaiho bridge, said Senior-Sergeant C. M. Anniss. In attempting to pass the lorry Maunsell collided with it, and' his truck came to rest against a concrete wall. The driver of the metal lorry Eaid that 200 yards before the intersection he had signalled his intention of turning to the right. He was turning when Maunsell's truck struck his lorry. Sergeant A. C. Fookes, who appeared for Maunsell, said this was the first time they had heard of a signal hav; lg been given. It did not affect this case, but should other proceedings follow witnesses could be produced to prove that no signal was given. Maunsell was an experienced and careful driver, said Sergeant Fookes. There was no suggestion of excessive speed on the part of either driver. Maunsell was a married man with two children and had only 2s a day for himself out of his army pay.
