Turks Confident Russia Can Hold Nazis In Caucasus

Fear of German invasion from the C laucasus has almost vanished due to the T urkish belief that the Germans will be ui iable to overcome the Russian resistance in the southern Caucasus, says the Daily Ms lil's Istanbul correspondent. Turks' attei| ition is directed more to Egypt. He sasis that if Egypt falls Turkey's commu nications with the Allies through Pal estine, Iraq and Syria would then be menaced, threatening Turkey with serious isolation. The Turks are not neglecting their defence preparations but a large part of their attention is devoted to making themselves ready to play a leading ,part in the pacification of the Balkans after the Germans collapse. The majqrity of Turks believe Germany will collapse in 1943. Peo ple reaching Turkey from Germany reportt that the Germans believe they will be ui aable to win the war unless the Red ai rmy is destroyed by early Novem- I ber al Ihough many hope that the Japanese \ vill save the situation for Ger- ] many.
