Concert To Aid Barnardo League Funds at Hawera
A concert arranged by members of the Barnardo League at Hawera was of a widely vuried nature and was presented to a large audience. The ages of the performers ranged from about live to 17 years, and items 'by an orchestra of 20 and a senior choir were included . in the programme. As a result of the concert the funds beneflted by about £20. Mrs. Allan Evans, representing women s organisations, spoke of the work the New Zealand Barnardo League was doing. She had visited some of the homes in England, she said, and the help of New Zealand children was ofteri spoken of with appreciation. Mrs. A. K. Fyson, president, spoke ot the need of the league for iinancial assistance. Nine hundred war orphans had been received by Barnardo homes since the outbreak of war, she said. Three thousand ex-members of the league were now on active service. Although long service badges awarded to eiglit children who had contributed over 5s eacli year were not at present to hand, Mrs. Evans spoke to each of the winners. They were: R. Barclay, Ruth Fyson, Joy Giblin, J. HUI, Anne Trotter, 5Ioira and Shona Young, Peggy W'arner. A total oi £34 had been received by the league at Ihe box opening this year.
