Warning Given Of Punishment For Axis
Washington, August 21. A warning to the Axis to halt the atrocities against the citizens of occupied countries or they would face fearful retribution for their barbaric crimes was issued by President Rooseveit in a formal statement at a Press conference today. President Rooseveit said tljp American Government had been collecting evidence of such Axis crimes as the execution of hostages," and he added that the United • Nations were going to win the war, and when victory was achieved it was proposed that each United Nation make appropriate use of the, information and evidence respecting the barbaric crimes in Europe and Asia. "It seems only fair that they have this warning." he said. "The time will oome when they will have to stand in the courts of law in the very countries they are now oppressing and answer for their crimes." In the course of his conference President Rooseveit said the principal probItm now was getting adequ'ate raw materials. Priorities made at the beginning of contracts did not always work out. Replying to a question, he said he would never be satisfied with the war production and distribution of munitions, but he was not blue about it. He remarked: "Every nation on our side, and neutrals too, would like to have all the munitions we tuni out, but it is a World war, and we don't have all the implements of war we would like." Here President Rooseveit said he would like to have a million men in Australia— American men, plus Australians there, "but we can't get them there."
