A Good Beginning But Still More Action Needed
Rec! 10.45 p.m. New York, Aug. 22. Major Fielding Eliot emphasises in the Herald-Tribune that American successes in the Solomons are no more than a good.beginning. ; It now remains to.uiilise the qc'ctipied • islands for further offensive operations. The next United States mpve; he says, is iikely to be directed against Bougainville,. where the Japanese are at present in considerable strength but even Bou- ( gainville is only the second step in an operation : which niust include* within its objectives all the Japanese islands. "Until these points are retaken," he says, "we cannot consider, our situation to have decisively improved in the South-western Pacific. Not until then will we eiiminate the Japanese from every base from which they can threaten Port Moresby and the cities. and seaports on the east coast of Australia."
