Soldiers Prominent In Two Stratford Events
Twenty-eight men going into camp were farewelled at the Stratford railway station on Thursday, and in the evening 20 men on leave were guests at a concert and dance. At the station the men for camp were met by the Mayor, Mr. P. Thomson, the Stratford county chairman, Mr. J. C. Best, the Rev. H. Heaslip and Mr. J. C. Robins, representing the patriotic committee. Cigarettes were distributed, and a large crowd assembled to see the men depart. Men from all parts of Taranaki attended the concert and dance, which was held in the town hall. A presentation was made to each man from the Stratford district patriotic committee. Mr. Thomson, Mr. Best and Lieut.-Col. T. L. Gibbs, representing the R.S.A., were present, and the gifts were presented by Mesdames Thomson and Gibbs. The programme arranged by Mr. N. O. Ebbett comprised songs by Mrs. McBeth, Misses Shirley Feek, Joan Pellett, Marion Lawrence, Marie O'Sullivan and Messrs. Morgan and H. O'Sullivan. Mrs. H. Heslop was the accompanist. Two ballet dances were also presented by a troupe of girls.
