Menace of Barberry Discussed At Stratford
Because of the labour shortage, the Stratford County Council yesterday declined a rcquest from Mr. D. W. Evans, Huiroa, that barberry should be declined a noxious weed in the county, although several councillors supported the principle and commented on the alarming spread of the plant. Barberry was spreading from Huiroa to Douglas, said Cr. J. Reith, and other councillors gave instances of its spread in the back country. Such a declaration would have to apply to only back country, said Cr. W. Vickers. Open ploughed areas needed it for protection as shelter hedges. The plant was easy to keep in check. Sodium would kill a three or four years' old plant, said the chairman, Mr. J. C. Best, and other councillors said the plant was easy to eradicate, the labour problem being the drawback at present. The council decided to reply that it could not see its way clear to have barberry declared a noxious weed at present because of the difficulty of enforcing its eradication with the labour problem so acute.
