N.P. Jersey Cattle Club Reviews Difficult Year

Despite restricted activities because of unsettled conditions the New Plymouth Jersey Cattle Club had had a suocessful year, it was reported at the annual meeting yesterday when Mr. F. D. Ballantyne presided over a representative attendance. Membership had remained approximately the same as the previous year, though' some members were in arrears, stated the report. The year had closed with a credit of £24 4s 5d, eompared with £18 7s 6d last year. Two oaks contests were in progress. Of 46 nominations in the 10th oaks 32 had made the first acceptance, and 20 the second, the final acceptance being due next January. The 11th oaks, to be decided in 1944, had drawn 33 nominations and 18 or 20 would probably make the second acceptance. Owing to unsettled conditions Jersey week was not held but the club had combined with the other Taranaki clubs in inviting visitors from other districts. The report urged members to assist where possible to meet the acute transoort position so as to enable the classifiers to complete their itinerary in the province. Disappointment that it had not been found possible to carry on the provincial bull fair, which he had considered to be in the interests of the smaller breeders, was expressed by its sponsor, Mr. A. R. Bayly. The Hawera Jersey Cattle Club was now putting on a provincial bull fair, he said. It was pointed out by some members that the Hawera club was holding its fair in the spring time, whereas the New Plymouth club had proposed to hold its [provincial bull fair in winter, which was regarded as the time for the sale of females. The opinion that there was an opportunity for a national bull fair in Tarainaki was expressed by Mr. G. H. Bell. | Though sympathising with Mr. Bayly, iMr. H. C.
