Adjournment Of Parliament Until October 4 Agreed
Press Assn.
Coercion in national saving alleged.
Wellington, Aug. 21.
The House of Representatives adjourned early this morning until October 4 with the usUal proviso that should the occasion warrant the members would be called together earlier than that date. The House had quickly completed consideration of the remaining classes of the supplementary estimates, which were all passed by 12.30 a.m. The Appropriatlons Bill, making provlsion for the expenditure of £49,145,871, giving supply until March 31 next year, was introduced and passed through all stages. When the measure was being discussed Mr. Clyde Carr (Govt., Timaru) said complaints had been made that employees in some Government departments and some private firms were being almost compelled to contribute to national savings by what was almost a mild form of blackmail. The powers which the House had given to employers were in some cases apt to be abused. Mr. A. S. Richards (Govt., Roskill) supported the protest. He said it was a mild form of coercion and a disgrace to the Dominion that war funds should be raised in this way when much free money was available. The deputy Leader of the House, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, said it was the first time such a complaint had reached the Government. Working people had required no pressure to contribute to national savings and did so voluntarily and enthusiastically. Mr. Carr: They are bled white.
