Values Stay Firm In All Sections of Stock Market
Last week's trading in livestock throughout Taranaki proved again satisfaetory, reports the Farmers' Co-op. The volume of business has been above that of recent weeks, particularly so in dairy stock trading, values generally remaining very firm throughout all sections. There has been .a sustained demand for all dairy cattle close to profit and in early profit. Business in other sections has again been excellent, and all sale centres ■ report good prices for dairy cows and heifers. During the week £15 to £17 has been paid for best classes of cattle. A general range of values for good cattle has been from £12 to £14. Later cows and heifers enjoy more attention than hithertoJersey yearling heifers have sold from £6 10s to £7 for best kinds, but most prices continue around £5 15s to £6 5s. For smaller cattle and hold-overs values are firm at late rates. Beef and mutton prices remain firm, and for the next few months it appears that prices will be at their best. There is a shortage of supplies, and until the summer cattle come to hand no material leduction in values will take place. Any lines of store stock, both sheep or cattle, are enjoying keen inquiry. The mild winter and the good growing weather to date are governing features. Hoggets of both sexes, ewes and lambs (all counted) together with all classes of fattening cattle,' even young cattle. are demanded. Quotations are not common, and any lines that come forward are readily absorbed. Excellent saies are reported for all Jersey oddments, and, with competition keen, ready clearanees result at prices very satisfaetory to sellers. At the Hawera sale on Thursday the sheep section attracted only a small entry, but a good Bale resulted as follows: Fat and forward wethers 28s 6d, fat b.f. hoggets 25s 6d, fat ewes 25s, forward conditioned ewes 14s, small ewe hoggets 18s 9d. The entry of store cattle was good for the time of the year, and an excellent sale resulted throughout, butchers' classes selling freely: Best fat cows to £7 5s with other fat cows (ex dairy) selling from £6 to £6 17s 6d, empty two-year-old heifers £4 10s, £4 15s to £5, best quality sound empty cows £4 to £4 12s 6d, best heavy works cows £4 to £4 Ss, medium works cattle £2 18s to £3 12s. graziers' cattle £4 10s to £5. yearling Jersey heifers, average £5 9s. One of the largest entries of dairy cattle of the season came forward and the demand for. best cattle shows no weakening tendency. The large entry was readily disposed of and best springing cows sold from £14 to £15, with numerous other saies of this class from £12 10s to ^£13 los. Best cows, in milk, realised £12 os, other cows and heifers, in milk. £9 to £11, best springing heifers to £13 10s, with numerous saies from £11 10s to £13, according to quality. Later calvers brought £8 10s to £10. There was a good entry of pigs, which were sold under spirited competition. Saies were' Light porkers £2 15s to £3, best stores £2 to £2 10s. medium stores 30s to 35s. choice weaners 33s 6d down to 30s 6d, average weaners 25s to 28s, small 20s. It is epparent that farmers have been left short of pigs. and the resulting competition witnesses spirited saies at values well in advance of anything recorded for some time.
