Hostages Taken By Brazil After Sinking of Ships

Rec. 9.20 p.m. New York, Aug. 20. The Rio de Janeiro correspondent of the United Press of x America says the Brazilian Government has prohibited the departure of about 100 Germans who intended to embark on diplomatic vessels to Lisbon, ordering them to be held as hostages for 11 Brazilians arrested by the Germans in France. The action followed the sinjung of the coastal steamer Jacy, the sixth Brazilian diip to be torpedoed. The United Press reports that the State police seized four clandestine radio

transmitters and also arrested an Italian, Nicolas Madavino, in Aracaju Sergipe, near the site of the previous sinkings. A crowd attempted to lynch Madar vino. A high official of the Brazilian Government navigation line at Ne-.v York said that the sinking of the Brazilian ships was the result of the brazen operations of Nazi spies, who gave information on planned troop movements. The United Press of America reports that during. an anti-Axis demonstration at Santa Anna, Brazil, Herman von Brook, an ex-German army captain, was killed. Axis stores stormed by the der monstrators were considerably damaged. At Washington President Roosevelt today had a conference with the Upited States Ambassador to Rio de Janeiro. It is understood that the tense situation in Brazil following the sinking of Brazilian ships by Axis submarines was discussed.
